While English is taught at many schools, Hope High School has an immersive, English-speaking-only policy at all times during the school day so that students become truly proficient in the language. English language skills are critical predictors of students' success, both because the curriculum is taught (and tested) in English, and because English proficiency is required for subsequent education as well as for many jobs in Lesotho and South Africa. Hope Secondary is located near Mafeteng, which is one of the largest towns in Lesotho.

The South African Schools Act (SASA) of 1996 established a national schooling system and recognised two categories of schools: public and independent. Public schools are state controlled and independent schools are privately governed. All private schools were included into the independent school category.
